In the middle of nowhere... Algund
It almost appears as if the little village of Algund were literally sank into a vast sea of vineyards and fruit fields. Situated right at the gates of the city of Meran, wonderful crops and vegetables and of course the good grapes that make an ever better wine grow there and it nearly seems that in face of all these delicacies, the place itself was hardly worth a visit.
But that is certainly not so! Algund can claim the oldest brewery in the whole of South Tyrol. During a guided tour through the brewery, you will not only get to know the reason why it is so special, but also a taster of it. Be it the fresh air, the fantastic landscape or the friendliness of the locals, there definitely is more than one reason to go to Algund. Adjacent to the brewery, you will find the ruins of the fortress Vorst which you should not give a miss. The surroundings are all inviting for long drawn-out marches. You can walk along the Roman Road the ‘Via Claudia Augusta’ that used to go right through Algund.
Lots of possibilities
If you happen to prefer climbing, you can willingly do so in the nearby mountains with hiking and trekking paths leading to the mighty peaks of the Texelgruppe. The most famous trail however is the historic Waal Path leading past waterfalls and mountain gorges straight to the place where ‘Oetzi the iceman’ was discovered. Apart from wandering you can also go rafting, riding, swimming, paragliding, play tennis and lots more. A holiday in Algund is pure enjoyment during any time of the year!
