Brixen, where once the Bishop lived!
Embedded amidst chestnut groves, fruit culture and vineyards, Brixen is situated in the first valley bottom south of the Brenner Pass.

It is the oldest town of South Tyrol and if you happen to be an arts fan, you will have to arrange for some more time during your stay in Brixen, because the place is cram packed with treasures of all kinds: gothic, renaissance, baroque, rococo, Biedermeier as well as classicism and art nouveau are riches that constitute a feast for anybody's eyes. The first time the place finds mentioning is an official document dated 901 AD, when the prosperous homestead Prichsna (Meierhof Prichsna) was donated to the Bishop of the monastery of Saeben. The construction of the famous dome commenced in 970 AD which marks the rise of Brixen, even though the Bishop nowadays resides in the city of Bozen.
Glorious buildings all over
Yet, there still are innumerable buildings giving evidence of the glorious past: The Episcopal stronghold, the complex of the dome, the dome itself, St. John's Basilica, the parish church, the monastery of Neustift and above all the gothic cloister. As this artistic jewel was continuously repainted and painted over, it is in a way a 'live' piece of evidence brilliantly illustrating how gothic arts had overall been developing in the South Tyrolean region over time. Even though culture might not be of such tremendous interest to you, passing by spruce middle-class houses, strolling over slender and humpy bridges is still very worthwhile a walk.
Marvellous surroundings
The South Tyrolean landscape of course also has quite a bit to offer: close by you will find numerous chestnut groves and vineyards which are all important for traditional festivities during autumn and if you like sports, then you have certainly come to the right place: whether you start off from your hotel to get to the skiing resort of Plose or paraglide over the region or go for a swim or into the sauna, you will definitely find one or the other activity to your liking. One thing however is for sure: You will never feel bored in Brixen in South Tyrol!
