The landscape which faces the south is all inviting for long drawn-out walks and hikes through chateaus to the historical estates and to little nice cafés, as the traditional siesta is still part of everyday life in this part of the world. Do also try some of the customary drinks, such as the Vernatsch (a type of red wine).
At the wine museum in Kaltern am See you can find out more about the historical development of traditional professions, such as winegrowing or coopering as well as many other interesting things. A visit to any of the many wineries is also worth while, but if you prefer going on a more adventurous trip, you might want to go up the Mendel by cable car. It was constructed within only two years at the beginning of the end of the 19th century and was considered a technical masterpiece at the time.
Nowadays it takes pride in being both the steepest and longest cable car route on earth. You do not have to be scared though, but rather look forward to viewing the tremendous panorama. Kaltern in South Tyrol has its charms even from high above!
