Lajen: a pardise for excursionists
Lajen in South Tyrol is the border between the smooth stretch of the landscape in the Eisack Valley and rough cragged rocks of the Dolomites. This contrast which so much shapes the character of the little village of Lajen is beyond comparison anywhere in South Tyrol.
A holiday residence is situated amidst vineyards and yet, because of its propinquity, almost sits next to the mountain pastures which are so characteristic for the area. Facing the North sides of the higher reaches of the Alps with their well-known glaciers, Lajen is located on a bevelled rock which had always played an interesting and also important part, since it marks the boundary of German and Ladin culture. You will find plenty of opportunities to go hiking on one of the long and drawn out paths.
One thing you should however not give a miss is a walk via the long-standing postal path of St. Peter which will lead you over green fields, resplendent farm yards and deep forests to the so-called ‘Rock Fall of Pontives’ (Felssturz von Pontives). Huge stones block the valley and denote the linguistic border of the German and the Ladin language. The legend tells that a giant had been sitting at the passageway of the valley and had been throwing these enormous stones at merry wanderers. The reason for his malice had supposedly been a woman who had burnt his old clothing…!
So should you ever roam in these abouts, do take some extra clothing with you in order to appease the roaring giant… In winter the landscape sinks into a white eiderdown quilt of snow and offers you innumerable sporting and outdoor activities, such as skiing in Alta Badina or Plose, cross-country skiing or snow hiking, ice-skating or ice-climbing. Surely, some of these must be to your liking – a vacation in Lajen is guaranteed fun!
