The most renowned is the Waal Path which will take you from Marling, past Lana to Forst. Apart from a terrific view on to the Valley of Meran you can also see and admire the old irrigation system. The Marlinger Hoehenweg (‘High Path’) is a little more tiring and strenuous, but certainly worthwhile, if you happen to be an experienced hiker. In autumn you can watch the farmers bringing in their fruit harvest and maybe even manage to get a traditional drink as refreshment on your way.
The local specialities such as ‘Shaky Bread’ (Schüttelbrot), homemade ham or bacon naturally go along with fresh wine for which the region is particularly renowned for. If you have to go shopping and want to buy durable souvenirs – as opposed to such delicacies – the best thing to do would be to take a day trip to the ‘health capital’ of Meran, where you can (as Empress Sissy used to) stroll along the Alcoves and surely obtain one or the other small, but beautiful presents.
