During the second half of the 19th century, the Viennese doctor Josef Huber published an article about the amenities of the climate and the curative grapes of Meran. This is how the eldest cultural city was born and its development rapidly progressed. Soon the European nobility came and went. Thus Meran became a cosmopolitan city with all the splendour and grandeur that of course called for much attention: New estates, castles and ostentatious hotels were built with promenades and pathways such as the famous Tappeiner-Weg leading past cacti and other exotic plants.
The First World War however brought with it the most drastic of changes. Soon Meran was seized by the fascists and misused for all sorts of criminal activities. During the thirties Meran was refurbished: The spas were restored, many of the splendid hotels renovated and the gardens of Castle Trautmannsdorff completed. This made turned them into the most beautiful garden site of Italy with plants and flowers from all virtually all over the world.
A vacation to Meran will not only give you quiet and comfort, but many opportunities for relaxation. The superb Mediterranean climate with fresh mountain breezes and well-developed hiking and trekking paths or skiing slopes will make your stay a guaranteed adventure and if you are interested in culture, you can go on outings to fortresses and castles in the abouts. At any rate, you will find pleasure and enjoyment in Meran in South Tyrol and possibly be as fond of the place as Empress Sissi used to be.
From the end of November to January the Christmas Market is held in Meran. Combined with fantastic spa and the warm welcoming, you will pass a really magic Christmas holiday!
