Mountain adventure in Ratschings
Only some 3.700 inhabitants live in the seven villages of the Ratsching Valley in South Tyrol which is one of the reasons why the valley is being referred to as the ‘Valley of Tranquillity’.
Innumerable footpaths and hiking routes pass through the proud and memorable landscape, shaped by picturesque hamlets and idyllic pastures on foothills and mountain faces. They offer plenty of opportunities for short or long drawn-out walks and for stopping by for some refreshment in a cosy and warm atmosphere. Because of fail-safe snow-falls the valley is a guaranteed winter joker.
Apart from skiing, the place also offers numerous other winter activities and of course out-and-out relaxation, complete peace and quiet and pure contentment, yet you will never feel bored in Ratschings. The place itself is not only renowned for its tranquillity, but for marble in particular. The one-mile broad Marble Wedge stretches over a distance of nearly six miles and becomes visible at several places.
Gorge of Gilfen
The most impressive sight you can get at this momentous view though, is during a walk through the Gorge of Gilfen which is carved into completely white marble and therefore truly is a unique and spectacular phenomenon. You can also get a very different perspective of the mountain, the rocks and the boulders when you go to see the Snow Mine of Ridnaun, a medieval ore with an entire tunnel network and a nature trail that does not only introduce minerals and granites, but also gives a more detailed insight into the miners’ lives. Should you however be more interested in the more luxurious grandeur and splendour, then an outing to the baroque Castle Maretsch is certainly beneficial: It is not only the relict of a grand residence, but also hosts the hunting and fishing museum of South Tyrol.
