Holidays in the Schnals: Ötzi and summerskiing

The entrance to the Schnals Valley opens up like the gates of hell, shortly after Naturns. You reach this valley through a narrow rocky gorge past Reinhold Messner’s Castle Juval. It is especially famous for its traditional farms, the monastery Allerengelberg and the Schnalstal glaciers with the ski region Schnalstal.

Schnals - Schnalser Gletscher - Meraner Land

The five idyllic villages Katharinaberg, Karthaus, Unser Frau, Vernagt and Kurzras all share the high mountain valley and its steep slopes. While the options for hiking in the Texel mountains or on the glacier are countless, a favourite outing destination is the place where the mummy of the Hauslabjoch, Ötzi the Iceman was discovered. I

f you feel tired of walking, take a ride on the glacier on the Ötzi Express, past moraines and crevices right up to the magnificent glacier cave. A unique spectacle awaits you there: a light display inside the glacier. If you are more interested in Ötzi the Iceman, have a look in the show tunnel within the mountain station of the lift facilities! Surely you don’t know all there is to know about the man from the ice yet.

For sportive people the Schnalstal is particularly fun: you can ski on the 35 slopes of the Schnalstal glacier basically all year round. In winter, a well developed net of cross-country ski runs offers many different runs, hiking routes, snow-shoe hikes and much more. In summer the rural scenery, the industrious people and the difficult conditions will cast their spells on you.

The high mountain fauna also has its own magic, in the Pfossental, a side valley to the Schnalstal, three eagle couples nest. Chamois and deer, marmots and buzzards are frequent encounters. The Schnalstal in South Tyrol is sure to whisk you away to a very special, almost forgotten world of nature and peace!
