St. Christina: holidays in the sun of Gröden!
Santa Crestina Gherdëina, or St. Christina as it is called in German, is situated on the sunny slopes of the Gardena Valley in South Tyrol. Opposite, the Langkofel rises majestically into the sky.
The mountain farmer village St. Christina has transformed itself into one of the most popular holiday destinations in South Tyrol: magnificent hotels line the streets like pearls on a string alternating with traditional farmhouses that are built with dark wood. In summer they are decorated with beautiful geraniums.
St. Christina has remained true to its tradition, however, without denying itself the comfort and luxury of modernity. Of the 1760 inhabitants over 90% speak Ladin. Thus, a holiday in St. Christina will give you an insight into the Ladin language and culture. If you wish to find out more, a visit to the Museum de Gherdëina in the neighbouring village St. Ulrich is most recommended.
Discover the surroundings of St. Christina
However, a holiday in St. Christina especially enjoyable for its majestic natural surroundings that are also very rich in contrast, the fresh mountain air and the warm-heartedness of its inhabitants: Beneath the high walls of the Dolomites you can find soft meadows, on which alpine cattle graze in summer, as well as numerous little Alpine cabins, where cheese and milk are processed. In winter, you can take the direct chairlift connection from St. Christina straight to the heart of the most famous ski areas in South Tyrol, Seceda, Monte Pana or Ciamponi.
By helicopter, you can enjoy the fascinating landscape from a bird’s eye perspective, while a walk on the Planet Path towards Wolkenstein past a 2m high spherical equatorial clock will lead you into the world of planets. St. Christina also has many cultural points of interest, such as the oldest church of the valley, little St. Jacob’s Church, which you can only reach on foot, or the Fish Castle (Fischburg) that is not open to the public as it currently belongs to a Venetian baron. However, even from the outside the castle is worth a look as it appears like a fairytale castle hidden away in the forest, inspiring fantasies of life as a princess or knight in this Ladin Dolomite valley. If you look closely, you are certain to find many traces of long-gone nobles.
