Back to medieval times in Sterzing

Sterzing in South Tyrol is the first city after crossing the Brenner towards the South. The small town with just under 6000 inhabitants became rich mostly due to its mining.

Sterzing - Eisacktal

On a walk through the old town you can still see the former splendour of the Fugger town: colourful facades, arcades with numerous shopping facilities, a multitude of traditional guesthouses with little oriel windows or golden signs that reach far out into the road. The Zwölferturm (Twelve Tower) that was built in 1470 at the border between the old and the new town is Sterzing’s landmark. A walk through the medieval town is worth while in summer as in winter.

Christmas Markets in Sterzig

In the historic center of Sterzig you will find the warmth of being together at the Christmas Market (end of November to beginning of January). Among stalls and shows, the Christmas Market in Sterzig offers unique emotions.

Summer and winter in Sterzing

In warm summer nights you can enjoy typical South Tyrolean specialties and traditional folk music on one of the weekly lantern festivals. In December the Sterzing Christmas market within these noble walls and gates glows in an especially festive light. Around Sterzing lie the unique skiing areas Rosskopf, Ladurns and Ratschings that promise endless kilometres of fun on slopes and in lodges. However, sledding, snow shoeing or cross-country skiing are all very popular in Sterzing: Walk from the Pfitscher high valley up to the Rosskopf (Horse’s head)!

In summer, stunning views into the world of glaciers that rise majestically above green meadows and forests open up to you. A very special summer experience is the Gilfenklamm (Gilfen Gorge): The Ratschingser Stream rages under overhanging white marble cliffs and warns of its might. Another rewarding destination is the mine Ridnaun at the Schneeberg (Snow Mountain). Maybe you are lucky enough to find a beautiful garnet! When the weather turns wet or cold, you can escape to the interesting hunting and fishery museum in the Castle Wolfsthurn. Within the walls of - art historically speaking - one of most precious castles in South Tyrol, Burg Reifenstein, feel like the damsel of the castle, waiting for her knight in shining armour.
