Villanders in the change of the seasons
Because of its sunny location right by the Villanderer Mountain, Villanders in South Tyrol with its hamelts St. Stefan, St. Valentin and St. Moritz offers you the entire range of South Tyrolean vegetation: from vines and apple orchards, through deep canyons and numerous brooks up to the lovely scented Rhododendron (“alp roses”).
This is also why the Villanderer Mountain is a very popular hiking spot, where mountaineers as well as relaxed hikers equally appreciate the enchanting landscape and the overwhelming view of the distant Sarner Mountains and the Dolomites. You can discover the roots of Villanders on hiking trails around Gravetsch Castle or Gernstein Castle right up to Bad Dreikirchen and learn something about Villanders noble gentlemen. Fields, meadows and green forests entice you to hike up and visit the rustic Villanderer Alp with its traditional alp cottages.
Mountain biking
For mountain bikers, too, this area is sheer heaven: racy descents, coupled with scenic ascents in all levels of difficulty. Apart from this, a visit to the Pfunderer mine is certainly worth while: Following the footsteps of long-gone miners through the refurbished galleries you can search for ore yourself. In winter you have the choice among 5 skiing areas: Gröden (Val Gardena), Plose, Vals/Jochtal, Gitschberg or Klausberg. In addition, a whole network of cross-country ski runs up to the Rittner Horn is at your disposal, as well as numerous toboggan runs.
