Discover Villnöss

The ‘king of the mountains’ was born in the scenic Valley of Villnoess and should you ever wish to climb up a rock face as swiftly as he used to, then you should make your way to the Valley of Villnoess in South Tyrol.

The crystal clear mountain air and the untouched nature really work wonders. Reinhold Messner, the world famous mountaineer, owner and director of a museum and politician was born in … Villnoess in South Tyrol, yes! The side valley of the Eisack Valley with the communities of St. Peter Theis and St. Magdalena is a true treasure trove: wide and open fields, coniferous forests and most importantly the ever-present pale peaks of the Dolomites make the abouts of Villnoess not only a paradise for hikers and trekkers and do not shy back from challenging routes, but also for more comfort-seeking souls who’d rather enjoy a relaxing stroll on smoother paths. There still remain plenty of sporting activities that you might like to have a go at, such as paragliding, mountain biking, Nordic walking, bowling – you will even find a shooting gallery in town.

Spheres of Theis

Theis in South Tyrol is particularly famous for its invaluable Theiser Kugeln (‘Spheres of Theis’) – hollow minerals that show geodes of amethysts. One or the other farmer may well the clandestine places where these glittering spheres can be found, but it is highly unlikely that he would divulge this secret to anybody. So feel free to make your way through the Villnoess Valley and on a probably futile search of the mysterious Spheres of Theis, but you will surely discover many a sundry treasure here in South Tyrol!
